About this work

This photograph was taken near the finish line at the North Pole Winter Carnival sled dog race in Alaska, March of 2001. The lead dogs, Chandra (fore) and Tuvok belong to musher Bonnie Borba of Fairbanks, Alaska, and are being driven in the 6-dog class by my wife Carol Kaynor. It's not that unusual to get a picture of running dogs with all their feet off the ground, but at around 15-plus miles an hour, it's harder to get them from the side. You'll notice Tuvok's slack tugline; if it had been tight, the image would have been much more mundane, since he would be mostly obscured and the symmetry of the legs would be lost.
